East Coast Heavy

New York and New Jersey surfing are not like anywhere else. There is nothing easy about it. The waves are inconsistent, it's a long commute to all beach breaks, winter brings the best waves and it is cold. But when it's good, it's really good. When the winds are bad in New York City, you know to get in the car and head for Jersey. We are all addicted to checking the surf forecast, it's like crack. This winter we chased some raw and heavy waves. #DieToRide

Locals Only Adventures #1: Rincon, PR

Five days and five nights on the road to happiness. We indulged in Rincon's tropical flavors, blue barrels, hill top views, luscious sunsets, and rich local culture. Mike R. found perfect air, Kolo shredded unforgettable sunsets, Mike D. flirted with beautiful barrels, Mike O. charged the lines and Jules cross stepped endless summer waves. Our local friends, Robert and Renee, shared some water secrets and dancing fun. We got lucky!

The New York surfing community is made of good people and creative spirits. Alberto Guglielmi is a New York photographer and surfer. In his Surfer DNA Portrait Series, 39 creatives came together to support his art project and cause. They included actors, designers, photographers, filmmakers, and chefs. In the portraits the fin became an extension of the subject's body showcasing the surfer's "connection to the water, both physically and spiritually," Guglielmi explains.

On June 5th, 2013 I had the pleasure to photograph the Surfer DNA Art Opening at the SoHotel ArtSpace Gallery in New York City. It was a brilliant evening of art, community and social cause.
